At Sunmarke, we believe that every child has the right to reach their full potential. The ‘Individual Needs Department’ (IND) supports and encourages every child to ensure they have access to the full curriculum that it meets their individual needs.

The needs of eligible children are assessed on an individual basis with parents discussing their child's situation with the Admissions Office prior to making an application for enrolment.

Our Individual Needs Department engages with children in a caring, nurturing and supportive environment giving them the confidence to 'have a go' at areas they find difficult. 

Our Support Strategies

Our support strategies include:

  • A wide range of in-class and after-school provision targeted at identified students to enable them to achieve at the highest levels.
  • The Support for Learning Team headed by the Special Needs Coordinator who coordinates the support provided for students by learning support teachers and teaching assistants. The focus is to ensure the child becomes as independent as possible in his learning and less reliant on the intervention of adults. 
  • A provision to enable students with medical and/or physical needs to be fully included within a mainstream school.
  • English as an Additional Language Learning (EAL) support which includes an induction coordinator and home-school link workers. The focus is to raise literacy standards, particularly in writing and reading comprehension, which are crucial to a child's long-term success.
  • The Learning Support Unit which supports students with specific behavioral difficulties. 
  • Mentors who work with individuals and small groups.
  • Support for ‘gifted and talented’ students to provide individualized accelerated pathways for learning.
